We are currently seeking a Rolling Stock Engineer to join our Melbourne team!


About the Role:

The Rolling Stock Engineer will initially ensure the rolling stock design is developed to meet the needs of future operations, with a strong focus on safety, performance, and optimized life cycle cost. The scope of this role will evolve and develop through project development. Your day to day responsibilities may include:

  • Leading the development of the Rolling Stock Concept Document, including operator functionalities and maintenance requirements.
  • Translating the concept into clear project needs and requirements.
  • Driving enhancements, upgrades, and configuration changes to improve reliability, scalability, and user experience.
  • Analysing reference designs to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Benchmarking rolling stock designs, particularly for GoA4 systems, to incorporate best practices.
  • Reviewing and challenging rolling stock reliability targets.
  • Ensuring seamless integration of rolling stock design with other subsystems.
  • Leading depot equipment design specifications and integrating predictive maintenance technologies.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to align rolling stock improvements with operational priorities.
  • Ensuring design, operation, and maintenance meet regulatory and industry standards.
  • Actively participating in design reviews to promote an operator-led approach.
  • Owning and refining lifecycle cost (LCC) assumptions throughout the design phase.
  • Maintaining up-to-date documentation and supporting reviews, audits, and inspections.
  • Conducting testing and quality assurance to validate functionality and performance.
  • Monitoring system performance, analysing data, and identifying opportunities for improvement and cost savings.
  • Staying current with emerging technologies, trends, and regulatory changes, and addressing their impact on system operations.
  • Providing expert technical guidance within your area of specialty.

About You:


  • Master’s degree or Engineering, or a related field
  • Proven experience (7 to 10 years) in rolling stock design, manufacturing, test & commissioning and maintenance
  • Proven experience working across depot equipment, special tools and new technologies for predictive maintenance
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders
  • Certification or training in relevant system technologies or methodologies
  • Experience with project management methodologies and tools
  • A track record of successfully delivering complex system projects on time and within budget
